He's stinky

posted by Kendel:

sorry, yeah, we've been MIA.  That's what having a newborn will do!  But I had to write this conversation out before I forgot it because it was so funny.  Let me back up one sec here first.  Erin started preschool yesterday (EEK) and had a great day.  The only thing that needs improvement so far is the fact that she talked the entire 2 hour nap period.  This does NOT surprise me because she really does talk ALL the time.  In fact, as I sit here typing this, I have this little bird voice next to me "mommy...mommy...MOMMY!!!  Why do we have chins?" (catch my drift?)

OK, so a few minutes ago we're sitting here and this is how it went down:
Me: "Erin, do you like your teacher Jess"
Erin: "yeah, but the other one is stinky"
Me (scratching my head): "What do you mean the other one is stinky?  Which other one"
Erin: "Dat other man teacher, he's stinky"
Me: "What do you mean he is stinky?  You don't like him" (thinking maybe stinky was her code word for not liking him)
Erin: "He's just stinky - his air, his air is stinky"

Taylor joins in....
Taylor: "Oh she means his breathe, he must have stinky breathe"
Erin: "Yeah, his breathe is stinky"
Taylor: "Yeah, just like Daddy.  Sometimes Daddy has really stinky breathe in the morning" (she wrinkles her nose and fans the air in front of her face)
Erin: "oh yeah, STIIIIINKY"

I could have let them go on and on, but did the "motherly" thing and interrupted and had a conversation with them about how we don't ever say that out loud to people...etc, etc, etc....

I dunno, maybe it was the expressions on their faces, but it was funnier in person.  These kids kill me!!!

Other quick funnies this week:
The girls sing "It's a hard knock life" from ANNIE with the words "It's a challuh bread for us"
Whenever I ask Taylor to clean something up, she responds with a sing song "OK Mrs. Hannigan" (aka - the drunk orphanage director also from ANNIE).  greeeeat.....

I don't know what it is but I want it

Posted by Dave...

I was getting the girls ready for bed tonight which consists of going potty, putting a diaper on Erin, brushing teeth and reading a story.  Usually, because we do the same routine every night, it is often uneventful but then again, nothing is routine because life with a 2 year old and 4 year old is alway full of surprises.

Both Erin and Taylor had forgotten various purses, stuffed animals and whatever else downstairs so I sent Taylor down to gather up all the stuff while I got Erin into her diaper.  We had run out of Erin's normal diapers the night before so we decided to put her in pull-ups that we had left over from when Taylor was transitioning to a diaper free life.  As a side note, this is the only diaper that Erin wears during the day now and most mornings she wakes up with a dry diaper so she is close to a diaper free life which is about a year ahead of her sister.  It is amazing how quickly a 2nd child picks things up from watching her older sister.  I am hoping it will be even faster for baby #3 and have set a goal of 6 months to be out of diapers for her :-)

Anyway, back to the story.  Erin was confused by the new diapers and said "those are Taywahs".  I responded that "they are not as she doesn't need them anymore and look how cool they are as they have Cinderella on them."  I was trying to make sure Erin would not throw a fit and not want to wear a diaper to bed as I pictured myself having to change the sheets in the morning and crib sheets are the worst to change.  Erin was very excited about the new big girl pull up diaper and showed Kendel as soon as she came upstairs to say goodnight.  Before that happened though, Taylor came back upstairs with a couple of things from downstairs but nothing she went downstairs to get.  At one point I would have asked why she didn't get the other stuff but after 4 years of being a parent, I just go with the flow now and just smiled as she walked by me to her room.

And then I heard something that makes this night not so routine.  When Taylor came out of her room after putting the stuff she brought upstairs away, she came out with one of her greatest pearls of wisdom I have heard in a while..."I don't know what you took from my room and gave to Erin, but I want it"

Classic!  Taylor clearly heard part of my discussion with Erin as she made her way back upstairs but had no idea what we were discussing.  What was even better is that Taylor said it in a very calm and matter of fact type of voice and not a "GIVE IT BACK NOW" voice which we have heard from time to time.

Oh the Joys of Pregnancy!

Posted by Kendel......

Just had to throw this entry in here real quick while I have a few moments, because this is cracking me up.  I am currently 38 weeks and 1 day pregnant (and yes, that 1 day is important).  As anyone who has ever been this pregnant can understand, I am quite uncomfortable.  Well, I guess I never realized how obvious I must be making it to the girls (Dave, that's another story).  Last night, both girls took it upon themselves to stuff stuffed animals up the front of their shirts and then say "ohhhhhh, I can't even bend over anymore.  This baby needs to come OUT".  Dave and I were in hysterics.

I'll be posting soon about Erin's love of purses....but wanted to get this up before I forgot!

Best Girls Night Ever

Posted by Dave...

Last Friday was a day that Taylor was in school.  Normally she goes Tuesday and Thursday but she was running a temperature on Wednesday so we delayed day 2 that week by a day.  I went to pick her up at about 4:30pm and when I saw her, she was giddy to show me her new braid in her hair.  Apparently they had some hair fun in class that day.

We were havig Pat and Elise over for dinner that night which was a lot of fun for the girls because they found a new best friend in Pat.  He played hide and seek, built castles, played with blocks and suffered through other fun games with them.  By the end of the night, I'm sure Pat went home tired.

As for the girls, we decided to let them have a joint girls night (getting to watch TV in mommy and daddy's bed) as we thought it would keep them entertained for a while and maybe they would both fall asleep at some point.  Boy were we wrong about that.  Actually, we never thought they would fall asleep, that was more of a hope.  It was like a party upstairs!  All we kept hearing downstairs was the thump of the girls jumping out of our bed followed by the pitter patter of little feet and the occasional yelling down to us from the landing at the top of the stairs.  This went on for a while.

When it got fairly late, we decided to put the girls to bed (after they had made their way back downstairs to continue their party).  Erin was getting a little crazy as she has been known to do when she is over tired and Taylor was starting to fall asleep on the couch between Kendel and I.  I took them upstairs and got them ready for bed.  Erin went in her crib and Taylor went back in mommy and daddy's bed to fall asleep with the TV on (typical girls night).  On our way into the room, Taylor turned to me and said, "this was the best girls night ever!!"  It made me laugh inside (didn't want to embarrass her) because I used to remember those type of nights when my parents would have guest over around the holidays.  We got a little more freedom and I always remember those nights fondly because they were so much fun to me at that age.  When Taylor informed me that it was the best night ever, it was like I was instantly taken back in time to one of those nights and can totally relate to her excitment.

Just for the record, her prior favorite girls night was just a couple of weeks ago for Thanksgiving when Jeni, Jay and Mimi stayed over for the night.  That was the "best girls night ever" up to that point and she told me that night as well.  I am starting to wonder if every girls night is her favorite girls night ever and I am not sure what Christmas night is going to be like.  She might not be able to control herself  :-)

Tangled (aka Erin's first movie)

Posted by Dave...

This is another one of my more recent favorite stories.  I took the week of Thanksgiving off from work to finish up a lot of odds and ends around the house from the kitchen remodel and to spend some time with the girls since I have had a tremendously busy year with little to no vacation.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we decided to go and see the movie "Tangled" as a family which would be our first one together in the movie theater.  Taylor has seen a couple in the theater but Erin has never been although seen plenty of them at home.  We got there early enough because we figured it would be busy on a weekend with rainy weather and being a kids movie.  Kendel sat on one end, Taylor next to her and then me with Erin on my lap for the movie.

We learned with Taylor that the movie seats are too low and the girls do not weigh enough to keep the seats flat so the first time we took Taylor to a movie (Toy Story 3) and tried to get her to sit in one of those seats, her feet ended up above her head with her falling down the crack of the seat which meant she ended up on my lap for that movie, not that I am complaining. :-)  We solved the problem for Taylor though by bringing a foam booster seat which props her up a lot higher so she can see the screen and helps to keep her seat flat.  It works great.  We only have one of those seats though so Erin had to slum it with Dad.  Of course I loved every second of her sitting on my lap because I was getting hugs, cuddles and kisses for 90 minutes with many "I love you"s thrown in there throughout the movie.  She is just such a lovable kid and is constantly giving hugs, kisses and I love you.  Her latest is that she says, "I love you to infinamy".  Very cute.

Besides all the love that I was getting from Erin, it was really entertaining to see Taylor watching the movie.  She LOVED it.  I had taken her to see a movie called "Megamind" not too long prior to this movie (just Taylor and I for a Daddy daughter date) and although she seemed to like it, this movie she loved.  It was great to see her laughing out loud on a number of occasions throughout the movie for sometimes the littlest things.  Disney did a great job with this movie because Kendel and I loved it too.  The horse in the movie was hysterical and had Taylor and Erin laughing the whole time.  They really could have just put him on the screen for 90 minutes and the girls would have been happy.

If you haven't seen the movie, it is definitely worth seeing whether you are an adult or for your kids.

It will definitely be a movie that we will own when it is released on DVD.  And girls...for when you are reading this in 20 years, DVDs (digital video disc I think) were disc like objects that went into a "DVD Player" so that you could watch a movie at home or in your car.  You could rent or buy them from the video store or online.

I came across some funny/cute pictures as I was updating the blog that I wanted to share.  Lots of random ones here...

Do you need a Q-tip

Posted by Dave...

So much of life with kids happens by surprise.  What I mean by this is that you can walk into a room and see something you were never expecting to see.  On the particular day in question, all I had to do was open the shower door and I saw something I never expected to see.

Kendel was out running errands and left me home alone with Taylor who was 1 1/2 at the time.  Erin was not yet with us although she due to arrive in a couple of months so technically, she was out with Kendel.

I had locked Taylor and I in the master bedroom while I wanted to take a quick shower which gave Taylor only two rooms to entertain herself but also, and more importantly, limited the damage that she could do while I was showering.  I was in the shower for about 5-10 minutes and I could see Taylor on the other side of the door sitting on the floor which I thought was great because she was quietly playing with one of her toys and I didn't need to worry about what she was up to in the other room.  The flaw in my thinking was that although we have a glass door, it is a glazed door and you cannot really see what someone is doing on the other side of it.  You really only know that they are there.

When I opened the door to grab my towel, what I saw was so amazing and surprising that I immediately went downstairs to grab the camera pretty much still soaking wet because I didn't want to miss the photo opportunity. Luckily, Taylor stayed on the floor playing with her "toys" while I went downstairs so I could take this masterpiece of a photo for record keeping.

Enjoy.

I love the look on her face.  It is as if to say, "what, is there a problem?"  I have plenty of other photos like this with Taylor that I will post later to add to this story.  She has always been quite mischievous!

More Photos of Taylor up to no good...

Towel over the head

Posted by Dave...

This story happened a long time ago and to be honest, I can't remember exactly when it happened but it was definitely when Erin was walking/running and I need to write about it because it was very funny.  It was definitely in the early days of the walking/running which probably puts us in the spring of 2009.

And off we go.

Erin has always been more of a goofball than Taylor and has a tendency to put things on her head which is no real surprise for a kid to be doing.  The problem sometimes lies when by putting something on your head, you lose you ability to see anything and then try to do something.

One night I was in the kitchen by the fridge getting something to eat and Erin was near me but more towards the hallway so she was on the other side of the island.  She had a towel in her hands.  Kendel and Taylor were in the other room on the couch watching some TV.  Erin was in a very goofy mood and kept putting the towel on her head and taking it off and laughing.  She might have been playing peek-a-boo with me or something but that detail escapes me and isn't really important anyway.

As I was getting something out of the fridge and not paying attention to Erin for a couple of seconds she put the towel back on her head but this time decided to run as fast as her little legs would carry her.  Did I mention she had a towel on her head which completely covered her face?  She was headed into the TV room but the only problem was she was a little off course.  If going into the TV room meant she needed to proceed on a straight line, she was headed about 15 degrees off that line to the right.  Problem number 2 was that she was breaking land speed records.  There was no way for me to catch up with her by the time I realized what was about to happen.  The only thing I could do was either to wager on whether she would hit the table or the half wall entering the room and start to warm up the car for the trip to the emergency room.

I did all I could to prevent what was about to happen with the only action that I could take and screamed "ERIN, NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo".  You need to picture this like in the movies and in slow motion because that was what I felt like at the time.

My actions were of no help.  Erin ran straight into the wall at full speed which I estimate was 65 mph.  It was fast.

The aftermath is a blur.  There was some screaming, crying, praying, asking "why me?" and that was just from me.  Actually, I honestly don't remember the aftermath but much like whether Erin was playing Peek-a-boo with me or not, it is irrelevant to the story.  She was ok after some crying on Mommy's shoulder and no trip to the emergency room was needed.  The towel required stitches but was ok after a couple of weeks and some rehab.

As for me, I will never forget seeing her run across the kitchen and straight into a wall.  It is one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I can say that now looking back on it  :-)  At the time it wasn't so funny but the events of that night have helped me realize that as an adult, you can never understand the thought process of a 1 year old or any child of any age for that matter.

Girls Night

Posted by Dave...

Oh where to begin.

Taylor, for some time now, has been spending "girls nights" in Mommy and Daddy's bed on the weekends.  I am not sure how this got started but things like this usually happen when the girls are sick, sad, scared or something to that effect and then they don't want to be in their own beds.  Anyway, Taylor loves her girls nights and looks forward to it all week.  She actually starts asking for it on Monday and every night of the week until the weekend arrives.  I have tried to teach her the concept of time in terms she understand like "Girls night will not be here until you go to school twice this week and you haven't gone yet."  This approach doesn't really work as I still get the question every night although she is understanding it better now.

The reason that they are called girls nights is because Taylor goes into our bed and watches "Sprout" (a kids channel with terrible shows she loves) and then Kendel goes up later while Taylor is still awake.  By the time Daddy comes to bed, Taylor is asleep so the fact that she never sees me means that it is a girls night.  I have another names for this night too.  It is called Daddy time where I get to veg on the couch and watch whatever I want so I love girls night as much as she does!  However, Taylor eventually starting telling Kendel not to come up so girls night turned into girl night which has subsequently affected Daddy time.

Erin never gets a girls night for a number of reasons.  First of all, I don't think Taylor would allow it as she sleeps with her door open and would never stay in her room while Erin was in our bed watching TV.  I can visualize the tantrum already.  Another issue with Erin is that she is a very strange sleeper.  We have a video monitor in her room and enjoy watching the party that she will have until 11pm at night or later sometimes.  The 2 or 3 times that we have had her in our bed since she was born and in her own room have resulted in massive parties and little sleeping as she bounces around the bed.  The only other option would be that girls night would be Taylor and Erin in our bed but that would involve very little sleeping and therefore very cranky kids the next day so that is not an option either.

So, right now, Taylor is the only one getting girls nights.  What is funny to watch though is that we tell her she is not allowed to tease Erin about it or really talk about it in front of her.  Have you ever seen a 4 year old try to keep a secret?  She will whisper to me as we are getting ready for bed upstairs, "Erin is going to go into her crib and then I am going to go into Mommy and Daddy's room for a girls night but shush, we can't tell Erin".  The only problem with a 4 year olds whispers at times is that the neighbors can here them.  On a side note, Mommy and Daddy's room used to be called "Mommy and Scaddy's room" for a long time.  I used to laugh because it made me feel like I was a disease or something.

This brings me to today.

Lately, Taylor feels Girls Nights should be every night.  This happened the other night for the first time when Kendel was out enjoying a dinner/movie or enjoying it as much as a 37 week pregnant woman enjoys anything.  I was putting the girls to bed and Taylor was insisting it was Girls Night on a Tuesday.  All of this was because the prior week she got a Girls Night on a Thursday for some reason I can't remember.  All I know is Kendel is to blame for this issue.  She allowed Taylor to pick 2 or the 3 days from Thursday to Saturday and Taylor chose Thursday and Friday.  Since then when I say Girls Night is not until the weekend, she replies "but it wasn't last week."  Kendel got to have this argument for the first time last night and I think realized the monster she created. :-)  I think we have weathered the storm but we will see what tonight brings.

You're not my Bes Fwiend

Posted by Dave...

Life with 2 girls has been very entertaining.  It has been very interesting seeing where the girls are very similar and where you might think they came from different parents in different parts of the world.  A great example of this is their approach to confrontation which happens quite often at this age and some days, it seems to happen almost every 5 minutes.

When Taylor gets upset with Erin, she usually runs to mommy or daddy and rats out Erin for whatever she has done which usually involves taking something that Taylor was playing with or sometimes just thought about playing with.  The best days are when they start fighting over stuff they thought about playing with but were not actually in physical possession because when that starts to happen, the day usually goes downhill pretty quickly.  The only hope for days like that is nap time or bedtime!

Anyway, Erin has a very different approach to confrontation.  It usually involves her going up to Taylor and hitting her in the head and is often followed by "Tawa, you're not my bes fwiend".  I think she would give Mike Tyson a run for his money.  Anyway, if you follow the logic of Taylor's approach to confrontation, she usually takes the hit to the head and then comes and tells mommy or daddy.  God help us when she realizes she is bigger than Erin and hits her back!

With all that said, the girls get along great most of the time and like normal siblings, they have their moments.  And, for the record, Erin has told me that she is not my bes fwiend a few times as well.  My favorite example of this was at the dinner table one night when it was just the two of us.  I had asked her to sit in her seat to eat and I was just about to sit myself when she lowered her head, extended out her lower lip, started crying, said she was not my bes fwiend and proceeded to run out of the kitchen and go upstairs.  I was dumbfounded and quite entertained at the same time.  That was one I wish I had on video :-)
